Monte Cristo fest pt. 1

December 20th, 2008
by dmm

We made plans a month or so ago to watch the anime series “Gankutsuoh” together.  It’s an adaptation of Dumas’ The Count of Monte Cristo, moved into the future and replacing Rome with Luna etc.

Today we began this Monte Cristo fest, watching episodes 1-5 while the snow lurked outside.  Afterwards, Monte Cristo sandwiches of course!  We had picked up some swiss cheese, ham, and turkey at the grocery store today, so our first attempt was this: a egg-milk-vanilla batter, soak Challah slices and fry them up, 2 slices of swiss and one each of turkey and ham, and bake the sandwiches in the oven for a few minutes to melt the bread.

Verdict: ok.  The swiss was a little strong, and the bread wasn’t sweet enough.  I tried some powdered sugar on mine, which helped a little.  We also forgot that syrup was an option until we had finished them.

Plans are to try again with slices of sourdough and maybe different cheese-to-meat ratios.

More Kale!

I was very excited to find there was more kale in this week’s farm share. Last week’s kale turned out to be nearly the best thing in the share (the satsuma were excellent) and I wanted more!

Besides the kale we received 4 apples, 4 oranges, a handful of small carrots and a handful of large ones, 6 white potatoes (I’d rather have yams!), one green bell pepper, a fistful of lettuce, two onions, two heads of garlic, and a plastic container of fresh rosemary.

(This last means I am defrosting lamb for this weekend.)

Also two sort of different things: nearly 3 cups of cranberries and 4 cups of pecans. Awesome.

Winter, By Bike

This week was our first time participating in the winter farm share (produce) from Enterprise Farm. They’re in a coalition with other small farms up and down the Atlantic and somehow deliver each other’s food (we got citrus!).

Additionally, ours gets delivered by bike, because we can’t make it during the pick-up time. But I’d certainly skip the pick-up just to know our food is delivered by bike.

I was very, very happy with the food in the share, which included:

  • two ears of corn
  • delicata squash
  • two bell peppers
  • four apples
  • two navels and 4 satsumas
  • 4 large white potatoes
  • two heads of garlic
  • two white onions
  • kale
  • arugala
  • one cucumber
  • two small perfect eensy heads of cabbage

It was all the perfect size for us and now I don’t have to worry (as much) about figuring out when to shop this weekend since I’m a bit short on time.

Oink!

Porcus
Last weekend we got a pork pack from the chicken people (somehow).

  • 3.5 lb pork butt chops
  • 1 lb pork chop
  • 1.5 lb pork chop
  • 2 lb pork chops
  • 3 lb pork roast
  • 1 lb sweet Italian sausage x 2
  • 1 lb ground pork x 2
  • 1.5 lb pork loin

Most of it went into the basement freezer but we have already taken the butt chops (which is apparently actually a shoulder?) and done a Chinese pork roast with it - it came out similar to the Char Siu we make but with less hoisin. Yum.

December Meat Share: the Lamb strikes back!

Picked up this month’s meat share. Plenty of lamb this time but not a lot of variety.

  • 3 lb Leg of Lamb
  • 1/2 lb Lamb Loin Chop
  • 3/4 lb Lamb Loin Chop
  • 1 lb Ground Lamb

  • 2 lb Chicken Breast
  • 3.25 lb Whole Chicken

I ended up missing the direct bus so I took the more complicated bus-train-bus route home. It took less than 30 minutes, which is how long I’d have waited for the direct bus.
